A year after Walt Disney made history with the release of Snow White and the Seven
Dwar fs.his artists were struggling to find the right design for the woodland backgrounds of
Bambi,the coming-of-age tale of a young deer.The film's production team realized they
needed an alternative to the style in their first feature-length animated film.Soon
they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong.whose work was on display as a new exhibit at
New York City's Museum of Chinese in America.
Wong.an immigrant from Taishan.China.arrived in California at 9 with his father in
1919.Wong eventually settled near Los Angeles.where he developed his passions for art and
drawing and got trained at the Otis Art Institute.
In 1938.The Walt Disney Studio hired him to draw the pictures between the main
drawings of the animators.Wong soon learned that the studio was trying to turn Felix
Salten's novel Bambi into an animated film.After reading the story,he saw an opportunity to
break out of his humdrum job.He said,、Gee,this is all outdoor scenery.I'm a landscape
painter.This will be great.
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings,he used watercolour to make sample sketches(
that led to forest scenes with simple strokes of colour and special attention to light and
shadow.Wong's sketches caught Disney's eye and became the guide for Bambi's background
artists.who were later trained to mimic()his style.
By the time Bambi hit theatres in 1942.a strike at The Walt Disney Studio had left Wong
without a job after three years of working on the project.He later became an illustrator for
Warner Bros.where he worked for more than two decades.

A handwritten document thought to have been penned by Galileo Galilei is actually a fake
()the University of Michigan has announced.
The university has had the manuseript since 1938,when it got the document
without paying a penny from the trustees()of Tracy MeGregor,a Detroit businessman
who had gotten the document at the auetion()of another collector in 1934.
The top of the manuseript is a draft of a letter that Galileo wrote before a presentation on
a new telescope in 1609.Galileo did write a version of this letter-a final draft is in the State
Archive in Venezia.Italy.The lower half of the document is a set of notes on the moons of
Jupiter,also based on real notes Galileo took.The final draft of those notes is also found in
Italy,at the Florence National Central Library.
But when Nick Wilding,a historian at Georgia State University,saw an image of the
document.he suspected something was off.The ink.the handwriting,and some of the word
choices seemed odd for a 17th-century document,he told the New York Times.Wilding
emailed the University of Michigan Library curator()Pablo Alvarez in May 2022 with his
concerns.and the University of Michigan launched an investigation.Three months later.the
university announced that Wilding was right.
The key is the watermark in the paper.Old paper often contains watermarks identifying
the paper's maker and the place of production,according to the University of Michigan
Library.The watermark in the Galileo paper reads 、AS、,the paper maker's initials,and
“BMO”,short for Bergamo,Italy.But the earliest known papers with“BMO”date back to
1770,meaning the document cannot be older than that.What's more,the university could
find no evidence that the Galileo document existed before the 1930s.
